Sparkle Abbey is the pseudonym of mystery authors Mary Lee Woods and Anita Carter. They’ve chosen to use Sparkle Abbey as their pen name on this series because they liked the idea of combining the names of their two rescue pets – Sparkle (ML’s cat) and Abbey (Anita’s dog). The authors co-write the bestselling Pampered Pets Mystery Series which focuses on the wacky world of precious pedigrees, pampered pooches, and secrets in posh Laguna Beach, California.
I’m pleased to introduce Sparkle Abbey!
Tell us about your current release/next WIP?
Our newest release, Raiders of the Lost Bark, is the 8th book in our Pampered Pets mystery Series. It features amateur sleuth and Bow Wow Boutique owner, Mel Langston.
In Raiders of the Lost Bark Mel finds herself “Glamping Under the Stars” with a blackmailer, Orange County’s hottest new gourmet pet chef, Addison Rae. But before Mel can put an end to Addison’s strong-arming, the chef is found dead. Mel is just one of many suspects who had motive to snuff out the demanding chef. Was it Redmond, the angry sous chef who detested working for Addison? What about rival chef, Pepper Maddox? The glamping chef gig was hers until Addison blackmailed her way into the job. And then there’s Asher, a charming fellow camper whose past relationship with Addison isn’t the only secret he’s guarding. Mel’s not one to tuck tail and run, even when it looks like she may be the next victim.
Raiders of the Lost Bark comes out March 25th.
Your titles are original and funny, and really capture the stories and characters. What was the inspiration for your latest/current release?
The setting was inspired by an Orange County camping trip that Anita and her family took a number of years ago at the desolate Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park campground. It was mid-August, and at the beginning of the five year drought for California. When she came back from their vacation, Anita knew some day the sandstone canyons, parched wilderness, and mountain lions would be a great contrast for our over the top, pampered characters.
The wonderful thing about the cozy genre is that it’s an escape. We are both fans of classic Hollywood movies such as To Catch a Thief, His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, and It Happened One Night. They entertain with a level of sophistication. They make you think and try to figure things out, but they’re not dark and depressing. Cozies are like that, no on-the-page graphic violence, not heavy and dark but by no means simple. The perfect escape after a stressful day!
How do you find balance?
We’re still learning. Balance is sometimes difficult when you work full time and write full time as we do. :-/ We’re incredibly lucky we both have wonderful families and beautiful, brilliant grandchildren who keep us grounded. To keep things balanced, sometimes you have to take a deep breath and remind yourself of what’s really important.
Okay, for something fun and different, if you were ordering your last meal, what would it be and why?
That’s so hard, we like all types of food, Italian, Mediterranean inspired. We do better with the drink. For us that would be a margarita! Thank you, Lora Lee for inviting us to visit with your readers. We hope ya’ll enjoy our latest Pampered Pets Mystery adventure, Raiders of the Lost Bark, out March 25th!
